How to Dispose of Scrap Electric Motors

Scrap electric motor energy into mechanical energy in many different devices such as fans, blowers and pumps. When they reach end-of-life, they can be discarded and recycled for the copper wire windings, steel or iron components, and rare earth magnets inside. These are all valuable materials that can be reclaimed for reuse in the manufacturing industry. This helps to reduce landfill, waste and pollution.

Almost anything that uses an electricity powered device will contain one or more electric motors. These include vacuums, computers, ceiling fans and much more. Depending on the item, it is usually easy to disassemble them by removing screws or other fasteners to remove them from the base of the item. These can then be taken to a professional recycling center to be sold for their copper wire coils and other metals.

Before you take apart any item with an electric motor, make sure it is unplugged or disconnected. Then use a screwdriver or drill to remove the screws that are holding it in place and then pull it out. It may be secured with some type of bolt and will require a hammer to break it loose if needed. Then if possible, use a pair of wire cutters to cut any insulated copper wire. This is another valuable material that can be sold for a premium.

As with any scrap metal, it is important to clean your items before selling them. Ensure that they are free of any dirt, grease and other contaminants that could lower their value.
