Mastering Transitions: Tips for Efficient Relay Baton Handoffs
A team’s first runner, known as the “anchor”, is usually their fastest runner. This runner should be a good accelerator/starter, a fast straightaway runner and a fast curve runner. The final leg of the race is often a slow runner who can run in a pack and catch up to other runners.
For relay races, the baton must be passed from runner to runner within a specific zone that is marked on the track with a visual mark, such as a triangle. Runners typically use a “blind handoff”, where the second runner begins accelerating before entering the zone and then opens their hand behind them after a few strides, by which time the first runner should be caught up and able to pass the baton. Auditory cues such as, “Stick!” repeated several times are sometimes used for this purpose.
